Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Welfare - Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a full-time Teaching Fellow in Sociology beginning in August of the 2019-2020 academic year, with possible renewal for the 2020-2021 academic year.  Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, including 29% first-generation college students, 23% Pell Grant students, 21% students of color, and 9% international students.  Our beautifully wooded and largely residential 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island, Illinois, a diverse Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.

Strengthening our diverse and inclusive community is central to the college’s mission and strategic plan. We seek applicants with an interest in fostering rigorous, inclusive, and high-impact learning environments for a diverse student body.

The successful candidate will be able to teach Gender in Society, Introduction to Sociology, and additional courses as needed within the candidate’s area of specialization.  The successful candidate will also contribute to the first-year student experience by teaching in the college’s first-year inquiry program and/or offering January-term courses aimed at first-year students.  The teaching load is six sections for the academic year.  Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a PhD in Sociology; ABD candidates will also be considered.  This is a one-year appointment, but may be renewable upon mutual agreement.

The College places a high priority on creating an environment supportive of the promotion of ethnic minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.  The college is also committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment.  Thus, we are particularly interested in candidates from underrepresented groups with a demonstrated passion for social justice and working with diverse student and community populations.  We require no campus service (e.g., committee work, student advising, or admissions activity) from a Teaching Fellow, although fellows are welcome to become involved beyond their teaching as they are inclined.

Augustana College is an equal opportunity employer and actively encourages applications from women and persons of diverse ethnic backgrounds. We do not discriminate based on age, race, color, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability or creed and strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply for this position.
